A heart valve prosthesis is in the form of a conical spring. The spring is formed from one or more spiral windings, with the coils of one winding fitting between the coils of the other winding. The spring is wound in a pre-compressed state so that adjacent coils are in contact with each other. When fitted to the heart outlet and in the rest condition the adjacent coils are pressed against each other and prevent the flow of blood. When in the valve open position, the coils are pressed away from each other and permit the through flow of the blood. USE/ADVANTAGE - The spring forms a simple heart valve and is easily visible under X-ray examination.
