An orthopaedic mobility assistance device, comprising first support means; handle means (1) connected to the first support means (5); trigger means (13) mounted to the handle means (1), the trigger means (13) being adapted to move selectively between a first position and a second position; second support means (7) connected to the first support means (5) at one end and having a ground engaging portion (9) at opposite end for contacting a walking surface; retractable spike means (11) adapted for selectively protruding from the ground engaging portion (9) to contact the walking surface with greater gripping action than the ground engaging portion (9), and retracting within the ground engaging portion (9) when the increased gripping action is not required; and connecting means (31, 53, 33) between the trigger means (13) and the retractable spike (11) means for protruding the spike means (11) from the ground engaging portion (9) in response to the trigger means (13) being moved to the first position and retracting the spike means (11) into the ground engaging portion (9) in response to the trigger means (13) being moved to the second position. |
