Reformer has bundle of catalyst filled suspended tubes, each with coaxial, spaced apart, shroud tube connecting lower mixing zone with upper region having discharge outlet, from the pressure vessel, for the product gas. The shroud tubes extend below each reformer tube to form individual mixing chambers. Cylindrical pressure vessel has inlet nozzle for H2-CO enriched, pre-heated, feed gas, with a further inlet for steam/hydrocarbon mixtures, and an outlet nozzle for cooled prod. gases. Inside the vessel are catalyst filled tubes, each surrounded by a shroud tube and enclosing a flow gap; reformer tube and shroud are connected at their upper ends and fixed to a tube sheet separating the upper region from the convection/reforming zone so that the bottom region and the upper region are connected via the flow gap.
