The invention relates to a process for the reduction of nitrogen oxides in the spent gas of a combustion engine, that contains at least 0.5 vol.% water, utilizing a catalyst comprising a support on which a nickel-containing catalytically active material has been provided, wherein during the reduction the nickel present is maintained in the zero-valent state by the presence of an excess of reducing agent.
