For the preparation of amino acids by fermentation, bacterial strains are used in which the activity of the secretion system is increased because of the chemical or physical mutation. Appropriate strains can be selected by means of a process for screening for secretion, in which there is measured in particular the variation, as a function of time, of the concentration of intracellular and extracelluar amino acids. In addition, the dependence between the pH and the secretion activity of the selected strain should be small. For the formation of lysine, a strain is used having a secretion level > 10 mu mol/min.g in the dry state, at pH < 7.5. The Corynebacterium glutamicum strain DSM 5714 having enhanced secretion activity, which is obtained by mutation from the strain DSM 6870, is particularly appropriate for the production of lysine.
