A carriage (5) guided on vertical rods (3, 4) and driven by a dual-action pneumatic jack (ram) (12, 13) carries a vertical pin (10) on which may be mounted a clamp intended to seize and to deposit an object at different heights. In order precisely to define the two low positions corresponding to the carriage, an adjustable slide (14) houses a transverse pneumatic piston (25) which, when it is advanced, constitutes a stop for a sleeve (21) integral with the carriage and, when it is retracted, enables the sleeve to pass through an opening (17) in the slide, the carriage then being halted when a hydraulic damper (30) which it carries comes up against the slide. Application to the handling of components on a manufacturing or assembly line. <IMAGE>
