PURPOSE:To provide a liquid crystal display device which makes light from a light source incident on a liquid crystal panel by almost 100% and displays a high-brightness, high-contrast display image on the liquid crystal display panel. CONSTITUTION:The light from the light source 3 is spectrally split by a polarization beam splitter into P-polarized light and S-polarized light. The P-polarized light which is transmitted through the polarizing plane 8c of the polarization beam splitter 8 is made incident on the liquid crystal display panel 1 as it is and the S-polarized light which is reflected by the polarizing plane 8c of the polarization beam splitter 8 is changed by a 1/2-wavelength plate 9 into P-polarized light, which is made incident on the liquid crystal display panel 1. |
