<p>Fluorinated functional compounds, namely perfluorinated and partially-fluorinated functional compounds, such as perfluorinated and partially-fluorinated carboxylic acids, esters, ketones, alcohols, amides, carboxylic acid fluorides, and derivatives thereof, are prepared by: (a) directly fluorinating a fluorinatable cyclic or acyclic carbonate by contacting the carbonate with fluorine gas in a temperature-controlled reactor to fluorinate the carbonate; and (b) combining the resulting fluorinated carbonate with a reactive nucleophile and allowing the carbonate and the nucleophile to react to form a fluorinated functional derivative of the fluorinated carbonate.</p> |
