PURPOSE:To input a character without worrying about a KANA (Japanese syllabary) input state or a Roman character input state while performing the input of a romaji (a method of writing Japanese in Roman characters) by a user. CONSTITUTION:When a conversion key provided at an input device 101 is depressed, a Roman character in a Roman character input buffer 102 is retrieved from an English word dictionary 104 first. When the retrieval of an English word for the Roman character in the Roman character input buffer 102 from the English word dictionary 104 succeeds, a KANA character stored in a romaji input buffer 103 is converted to the English word retrieved previously by a conversion means 106, and the English word is screen-displayed by a display device 107 as a conversion result. Adversely, when the retrieval of the English word fails, the KANA character in the romaji input buffer 103 is converted to Japanese language by the conversion means 106, and a KANA/KANJI character that is the conversion result is screen-displayed. |
