PURPOSE:To provide an electric discharge lamp lighting device which can prevent deterioration and destruction of filament capacitors connected in parallel to both of the filaments of an electric discharge lamp and does not require the use of capacitors with high withstand voltage and a luminaire which uses the lighting device. CONSTITUTION:An electric discharge lamp 6 is energized and lighted via a DC cutting capacitor 15 and a ballast choke 5 by the output of an inverter 3 for converting DC voltages into high frequencies, and a starting capacitor 9 is connected between the non-power supply side terminals of both of the filaments 7, 8 of the electric discharge lamp 6 and filament capacitors 16, 17 are connected in parallel to the respective filaments 7, 8. The DC withstand voltage V1m of the DC cutting capacitor 15 is set to V1m>{Cf/(C1+Cf)}.Vp wherein the output voltage of the inverter 3 is Vp, the electrostatic capacity of the DC cutting capacitor 15 is C1 and the electrostatic capacity of each of the filament capacitors 16,17 is Cf; the DC withstand voltage Vfm of each of the filament capacitors 16, 17 is set to Vfm>{C1/(C1+Cf)}.Vp. |
