The invention relates to a process for the preparation of gamma lithium aluminate possessing controlled microstructure and stoichiometry. According to this process, a non-polymerised liquid aluminium alkoxide is mixed with stirring, in an anhydrous short-chain alcohol, with an optionally hydrated lithium hydroxide and water is then added in order to hydrolyse the mixture and to obtain, after drying, beta LiAlO2 powder. This powder can be directly compacted and then sintered at temperatures from 800@ to 1150@C without prior calcination, giving a gamma lithium aluminate ceramic possessing controlled stoichiometry and microstructure (grains from 0.1 to 10 mu m).
