Process for detection of a moving underwater target using an active sonar, in which the sonar emits a plurality of different frequency pulses, and in which the signal processing comprises a path forming stage, coherent detection stages for each pulse, and incoherent grouping of the results obtained in the coherent detection stage. Advantageously, the pulse frequencies are selected so that each pulse reflected on a high speed moving target is outside the frequency range corresponding to the reverberation from each other pulse. The invention is of special interest when the path forming stage consists in swiching the sonar antenna's transducer signals to obtain at least one sub-antenna having a fictive movement to compensate the Doppler shift imparted to the stationary echoes by a sonar movement.
