In a power-assisted rack and pinion steering gear, intended especially for motor vehicles, a pinion (2) in a steering box (1) is in engagement with a rack (6). A servo-motor (11) is coupled to the rack (6) to provide power assistance. The pinion (2) is fitted so as to pivot in a fixed bearing (3) and a loose bearing (4). In the region of the loose bearing (4) there are two control valves (26, 27), the axes of which are substantially perpendicular to that of the pinion (2). The loose bearing (4) is guided so as to move perpendicularly to its axis in the steering box (1) only in the direction of the axes of the two control valves (26, 27). In this power-assisted rack and pinion steering gear, the forces used to actuate the control valves are not the axial forces acting on the pinion (2) but the transverse forces. Thus the actuation of the control valves is independent of the helix angle of the pinion teeth.
