In the case of the high-pressure discharge lamp having a pinched discharge vessel and a metal halide filling, the electrodes (4) consist of a straight shank part (17) and of a helical part (18) which faces the discharge and whose turns do not touch one another. Melted on to the end of the helical part (18) is a solid head part (19) which has a spherical shape at least in the direction of the discharge arc and projects to a depth of at least half the diameter of the wire into the helical part (18). The electrode shape results in a major reduction in flickering during operation of the lamp.
