The invention concerns a method for the determination of hirudin and synthetic thrombin inhibitors in blood or in constituents of blood. In this method, a prothrombin intermediate, a compound which splits prothrombin into meizothrombin, a salt thereof or a mixture of these compounds plus, optionally, buffers and/or other customary additives are added to the blood or blood constituents and the time from addition to the point at which coagulation begins is measured.
