PURPOSE:To enhance mechanical strength, durability and wear resistance by impregnating a silicon-contg. substance into a block made of carbonaceous starting material and heat-treating the block. CONSTITUTION:Carbonaceous starting material optionally blended with a binder is filled into a mold, pressed and graphitized to obtain a block of an arbitrary shape. This block is vacuum-degassed, a silicon-contg. substance is impregnated into the block optionally in combination with a carbon source and the block is heat-treated at 1,200-2,000 deg.C in a nonoxidizing atmosphere to form SiC whiskers near the surface of the block and at the grain boundaries. |
