PURPOSE:To efficiently remove NOx in exhaust gas by providing an exhaust gas cleaning material obtained by supporting a catalyst composed of a rare earth element or copper on porous ceramics to an exhaust gas passage and introducing liquid hydrocarbon such as light oil in exhaust gas into the passage on the upstream side of the exhaust gas purifying material. CONSTITUTION:An exhaust gas cleaning material obtained by supporting one or more kinds of a rare earth element and one or more kinds of an element selected from the group consisting of Cu, Co, Mn and V on porous ceramics having a large surface area is arranged on the way of an exhaust gas passage. A hydrocarbon substance such as alkine, alkene, alcohol or liquid hydrocarbon is added to exhaust gas on the upstream side of the exhaust gas cleaning material and the gasified hydrocarbon substance is used as a reducing agent to reduce and remove nitrogen oxide in the exhaust gas. The amount of the catalyst at this time is set to 0.5-10.0% by wt. of porous ceramics. As a result, NOx in the exhaust gas of a gasoline engine can efficiently be removed. |
