PURPOSE: To reduce the pickup of oxygen as interstitial impurities causing the brittleness of aγ-titanium aluminide alloy into the alloy at the time of executing directional solidification casting of the alloy in molds of ceramic. CONSTITUTION: The directional solidification casting is executed by a floating zone method, at lease inside faces of molds 2 and 4 are formed of calcia, and, moreover, metals selected from the group composed of niobium, tantalum, tungsten and molybdenum of the quantity effective for reducing the pickup of oxygen into theγ-aluminide alloy are incorporated into theγ-titanium aluminide alloy.
