The invention relates to internal combustion diesel or stratified-charge engines and more particularly to engines with a wide range of speeds. It comprises two double free pistons 12, 14 and 1, 22 moving in opposite directions from one another in an oversized cylinder, a central hydraulic transmission, a hydraulic motor-pump 6 rotationally driving the pistons 1 and 12 therefore fulfilling the role of inertia flywheel and generating a vortex movement of the combustible gases contained in the combustion chambers 13 and 25. This engine combines the advantages of high cylinder capacities, free pistons, free inertia flywheel, hydraulic transmission with continuously varying ratio, whilst eliminating the disadvantages. It is a universal engine which can be applied, for example, to cars. <IMAGE>
