Device making it possible, in a motor vehicle, to decrease the torque provided, in reverse gear, by a controlled-ignition engine driving an automatic gear box, with respect to the torque provided in forward gear for the same travel of the accelerator pedal 1, as a function of characteristic curves contained in a memory and calculation unit 3 and assigned, by a control device 6, to a member 7 acting on the aforementioned torque. The device includes a means 15 capable of detecting the position of a member 16 representing the gear ratio selected acting on a switchover circuit 13 capable of making the characteristic attenuated-torque curve B attributed to reverse gear exert an influence on the member 7 acting on the torque when reverse gear is engaged. <IMAGE>
