Recycling polymeric material - by splitting into low mol. wt. cpds. in a melt and forming halide(s) from halogen(s) present

Recycling of polymeric material (I) comprises adding the material to a melt whose temp. is high enough to split the material into low molecular wt. cpds. and the halogens in the material form halogenides with components in the melt whose b.pt. are higher than the temp. of the melt. The melt comprises metal, metal oxides or chemical cpds. with m.pts. below 600 deg.C. The halogen cpds. in (I) which do not form volatile materials at the temp. of the melt or react with components in the melt to form halogenides which decompose at this temp., remain in the melt or pref. easily removable in the slag. The material and its temp. are selected in such a way that the temp. is lower than the m.pt. of the halogenides. ADVANTAGE - The halogen-content of the melt is reduced considerably
