Detector of the passage of flat objects. It operates by detecting the break in a light beam emitted by an emitter and received by a receiver in the absence of the passage of an object; the said emitter 1 and said receiver 2 are mounted substantially side by side above the said path of advance of the objects 16 and a totally reflecting prism 20 is fixed opposite the said emitter and receiver beneath the said path of advance which is made transparent 21 to the light beam at the said prism.
