Fibre composite ceramic article with durable surface - made by applying ceramic foil or consolidation material onto article surface

In the prodn. of a fibre composite ceramic article with high surface durability by producing and post-treating a fibre composite article having a ceramic matrix and ceramic or carbon fibres, the novelty comprises: (a) producing a ceramic foil with a thermal expansion coefficient matching that of the ceramic matrix and applying the foil in the green, fired pyrolysed or sintered state onto the article; or (b) consolidating at least the rim zone of the article with a material (pref. a ceramic adhesive, glass or resin) and then heat treating. USE/ADVANTAGE - To produce fibre-reinforced ceramics such as SiC/SiC, C/SiC or C/C materials, useful for heavily and cyclically loaded structural components. The process is simple and gives a product which combines the advantages of fibre-reinforced ceramics and monolithic ceramics and which has high chemical resistance, freedom from pores and high wear resistance.
