Identification system for reception of traffic information by vehicle - stores encoded information from passive roadside transponder in computer memory for reproduction by dashboard instruments

A roadside traffic sign (13) showing, e.g. the distance from the commencement of a speed limit, is associated with a passive transponder (14) which is interrogated by an active transponder (12) in an approaching vehicle (11). The response from the passive transponder is encoded with the information displayed on the sign, for storage in the vehicle's computer memory. When the memory is read, the information is displayed on the dashboard, e.g. at the appropriate place on an electronic route map. This may be a liq. crystal display and the information may be repeated by a loudspeaker emitting an audio tone or synthetic speech. ADVANTAGE - Information capacity of system is increased by storage in memory of on-board computer.
