The device has a cylinder (40) with piston (36), and a die (18), driven with the piston. An extension tube (25) with threaded section is connected to the piston. A top tube extension (47) holds the extension tube, and is held in a frame (53). A lower tube extension (200) is connected to the upper via a connection element. The passage opening of the lower tube extension is formed, so that the extension tube passes freely. A stop (206) limits the max. advance position of the die. The extension tube is pushed into a distance piece (57). With max. advance position of the die, the rivets are completely set and upset.
