Dismantiling large calibre multipurpose shell - by using holding and clamping device, for reuse of components

Disassembly of large calibre multipurpose shell, comprising a drive portion and a head in which the head and a shell shaft portion (7) are joined by a threaded connection (11) in the casing cover (6) of the drive portion, is carried out by (a) drilling at least two holes (14-17) radially inwardly from the outer periphery of the drive portion through the casing cover (6) into the shaft portion (7); and then either (b) inserting projecting pins (18-21) into the holes (14-17), and pressing radially displaceable clamping jaws (22-25) onto the casing cover (6) to grip the pins (18-21), so that the drive portion is held during detachment of the head; or (b') pressing radially displaceable clamping jaws onto the casing cover to engage the holes so that the drive portion is held during detachment of the head. Holding and clamping devices, for carrying out the above processes, are also claimed. USE/ADVANTAGE - The processes are useful for dismantling large calibre multipurpose shell, e.g. as fired from 120 mm. tank guns, for re-use of components in mfr. of practice shells. They allow sepn. of the parts without causing irreparable damage.
