The tape recorder has a signal coupler for transferring the signal between the stationary circuit and the rotary head drum (3) different signal coupling elements (4...9) being used during the recording and playback modes. Pref. the rotary head drum is fitted to the shaft (2) of an electric drive motor (1). An opto-coupler (4,5) is used for supplying the signal to be recorded to the magnetic head, the playback signal obtained from the head via a second opto-coupler (6,7). A fixed transmitter (8) and a rotating receiver (9) may be used for the rotation phase information for the rotary head drum.
