A process for preparing 2-amino-6-chloropurine comprises reacting a 2,9-diacylat ed derivative of guanine with a chlorinating agent in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst containing chloride ions, and thereafter removing the 9-acyl group and the 2-acyl group by hydrolysis.
