In the prodn. of hollow articles of reaction cast resins, pref. by vacuum casting in moulds, or of metals, by casting in gypsum or ceramic moulds, the novelty is that the core is made of material which can be removed without leaving a residue. The core material may be a solvent-soluble material, a material decomposable material or a low temp. fusible material. USE/ADVANTAGE - For prodn. of prototypes of casting cores and associated mould parts by computer-aided design. Using reaction cast resins, prototypes (e.g. of intake manifolds) can be produced more rapidly and inexpensively than by prodn. of an auxiliary injection moulding tool (protoform). Using metals, prototypes are produced with higher precision and cleaner surfaces than by sand casting and simulate pressure die castings more closely
