A book support stand for top bound books, particularly typing books. The sta nd includes a base having a first panel (21). A first edge stop (24) extends upwardly from the first panel to hold the fro nt cover of a book at the distal edge. A second edge stop (28) extends upwardly to hold the rear cover. The second edge stop can be formed by an upstanding second panel (22). The support also includes a retainer which is most preferably in the form of an oblong ring (50) which is slid over the covers and posi- tioned at one of the hinges of the book covers. The base is advantageously constructed to allow a second mode of operation wher- ein loose papers can be supported in an upstanding position for viewing by a typist.
