Apparatus and methods are provided for variable length encoding (7) and transmitting (13, 14, 16) a plurality of predetermined portions of digital image signals which has been encoded to compress image data therein. Each of the plurality of predetermined portions is variable length encoded (7) to form a corresponding one of a plurality of variable length encoded portions. The amount of data in each of the portions is limited so that an amount of data contained in the corresponding variable length encoded portion is equal to or less than a predetermined target value. The variable length encoded portions are arranged (8, 10) in a plurality of sync blocks having a predetermined data length such that each portion is contained entirely within a respective number of sync blocks and the sync blocks are transmitted (13, 14, 16) via a transmission medium. <IMAGE> |
