There are provided a first machining step of feeding a tool (TL) in a predetermined amount (d) toward the center of the material to effect the cutting and then feeding the tool in the lengthwise direction of the material in an amount (W) corresponding to the width of the groove to form the groove, and a second machining step of feeding the tool (TL) toward the center of the material to effect the machining up to the groove bottom (GB) and then pulling up the tool to form the groove. Whether the first machining step be repeated up to a predetermined groove bottom (GB) to form a groove or the second machining step be repeated up to a predetermined groove width to form a groove is determined depending upon the profile data of the tool that is used.
