A powered wheelchair has two powered rear wheels 4 each of which has a motor M and a battery B mounted on the wheel. A controller C for controlling the motors M is mounted on the armrest 6 of the wheelchair. The motors M, which are preferably coaxial with the respective wheel axis, can be dynamically braked. The wheels may have some form of suspension built into them. The wheels are also designed to interchangeable with those used on conventional types of self-propelling wheelchairs.
