ELECTROVISCOUS FLUID COMPOSITION

PURPOSE:To obtain the subject composition which develops high shearing stress and excels in electric current characteristics and long-term stability by adding an inorganic compound soluble in acidic water to a suspension of a crosslinked polymer to coagulate the crosslinked polymer and separating the coagulated polymer from the suspension. CONSTITUTION:The objective composition comprises an electrical insulating dispersing medium and dispersed phase particles dispersed in this medium comprising a sulfonated polymer obtained by synthesizing a crosslinked polymer by effecting the aqueous suspension polymerization of a monomer mixture essentially consisting of a vinyl aromatic compound and a polyvinyl compound and optionally containing other vinyl compounds and sulfonating the aromatic rings existing in the crosslinked polymer. An inorganic compound soluble in acidic water is added to the suspension of the crosslinked polymer to coagulate the crosslinked polymer, and the crosslinked polymer is separated from the suspension to obtain a crosslinked polymer. This composition can develop, high shearing stress and excels in electric current characteristics and long-term stability.
