PURPOSE: To obtain a membrane assembly for separating water from liquid org. oxygen-and org. nitrogen-contg. compounds effectively by bearing a non- porous separation membrane of crosslinked, cured polyvinyl alcohol having specified properties on a porous ceramic support. CONSTITUTION: A non-porous separation membrane of crosslinked, cured polyvinyl alcohol having a thickness of 1-10μm and a number average molecular weight of 20000-200000 is borne on a porous ceramic support such as a porous alumina one. A supplied solution is brought into contact with one side of the support with the non-porous separation membrane, and doped on both sides of the membrane to keep pressure decrease, wherein the higher pressure side being brought into contact with the outer surface of the porous membrane and the lower pressure side with the outer. Water in the supplied solution and some parts of oxygen-or nitrogen-contg. org. compounds pass through the non- porous separation membrane and the porous ceramic support to the lower pressure side via pervaporation. Thus, they can be separated from water.
