PURPOSE: To help an operator to create a phrase inquiry for search of language materials of a document by selecting a next non-stop word adjacent to word data coinciding with a search key as a new inquiry word. CONSTITUTION: One or more inquiry words are inputted to a data processor by a user input device 32. A microprocessor 10 determines a search key based on these inquiry words and discriminates all of language materials of the document coinciding with the search key. They are displayed on a monitor 36, as phrases including word data coinciding with the search key, next non-stop (contents) words adjacent to word data coinciding with the search key, and all stop words interposed between word data coinciding with the search key and next adjacent non-stop words. An operator examines one or more displayed phrases to use one or more next adjacent non-stop words as a new inquiry word. This processing is repeated until a proper document is found.
