OPTICAL INPUT DEVICE AND METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR DETECTING STYLUS POSITION

PURPOSE: To provide the optical input device which determines the position of a stylus in a field by only a single emitter and a single detector. CONSTITUTION: An optical fiber bundle 264 is used to transmit energy from an emitter 260 to vertical and horizontal side edges 252 and 254 of a vessel 250. An optical fiber bundle 266 returns energy from input vertical and horizontal side edges 256 and 258 of the vessel to a detector 262. The vessel is covered with LCD masks 268 and 270 which intercept transmission of energy passing the vessel. A multiplexer scans LCD masks, and transparent windows 272 an 274 of darkened LCD masks are used to scan an energy beam 276 across vertical and horizontal side edges of the device. The stylus is located by detecting the intercepted beam.
