The invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition. This composition contains as active principle the combination of one mol of derivative of vanadium or of niobium with an oxidation number of 4 or 5, or of a mixture of derivatives of vanadium and of niobium in which the niobium and/or vanadium have an oxidation number of 4 or 5, with 1 to 100 mol of sulphur-containing L or D amino acid containing a natural amino acid side chain, or of a derivative of such an amino acid, this derivative being an alkali metal salt, a hydrochloride, a hydroxamate or a derivative containing at least one amide, ester or secondary or tertiary amine function resulting from the conversion of at least one of the acid and/or amine functions of the aforementioned amino acid, the aforementioned active principle being incorporated in a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient, vehicle or carrier. This composition is chiefly useful for the treatment or prevention of diabetes.
