PURPOSE: To shorten the responding time of a detector output whiel maintaining the sensitivity of the detector. CONSTITUTION: The apparatus for detecting an object comprises one or more induction sensors 12 connected to an oscillator 16. A timing circuit 34 decides a plurality of series of measuring frame segments. The oscillator 16 is coupled to an induction sensor input circuit 14 among the segments. The lapse times of the segments are measured. After the segments of the individual sensors are finished, the total measurement frame time of such sensor is calculated based on the time of the predetermined number of the segments. The total frame time is compared with a reference time, and the difference is decided. If the difference exceeds a threshold value, the output signal representing the presence of the vehicle at the periphery of such sensor is generated.
