PURPOSE: To form an intermediate useful to form a photographic coupler by reaction with phosgene or a bisthio compd. CONSTITUTION: This photographic coupler contg. a coupler part(COUP) having a phenoxy group releasable by coupling and having an aminomethyl. group at the 2-position is produced by allowing a coupler part having a phenoxy group releasable by coupling and having a hydroxyalkyl or hydroxyaryl group whose hydroxy group exists on theα-carbon atom of an alkyl or aryl group at the 2-position to react with a halogenating agent under ambient conditions and allowing the resultant product to react with an amine compd.
