Method of joining two or more flat workpieces together - by forming flanged hole in one workpiece and pressing flange over edge of hole in second workpiece

Two or more workpieces made of thin material, which can be plastically deformed when cold, are fastened together by means of a punch (7) and a die (2). A hole (19) is formed in the first workpiece (12) which is placed over the hole (B) in the die. The second workpiece (11) is then placed over the first workpiece. A hole is pierced in the second workpiece by using the punch which has a pointed end (10). The hole so formed has a flange which projects axially through the hole in the first workpiece. ADVANTAGE - The joint is equivalent to that made by using a hollow rivet but without the need of a separate rivet.
