Artificial hair for wigs and hair pieces comprises polyester fibres of structural units of formula (I) that undergo an alkali treatment such that the tensile strength lies below 140 cN. In (I), R = alkylene, arylene or arylalkylene residue, and R1 = alkyl, aryl or arylalkyl residue. USE/ADVANTAGE - The alkali-treated polyester fibres of units of formula (I) have a comparable tensile strength to that of natural hair thus enabling knots to be combed out more easily with less loss of fibres and consequent damage to the wig.
