An input stage (1100) is used to enter three-dimensional coordinate values relating to a clothes model. A pair of processor stages (1300, 1500) allows specific clothing patterns to be represented on the model that can be displayed and modified. Specific sections of the clothing may be identified and seams can be defined. From this a two dimensional layout of each item can be obtained. The clothing sections or panels are laid out for optimum cutting. If required the scale of the model and clothing can be varied.
