Quiescent current (Iv) and modulation current (IMod) of the laser diode (LD) are regulated for operation in the region of a threshold current corresp. to the knee of its characteristic curve of optical output power vs. diode current, and a decrease of transmission bandwidth occurs. A line appearing in the optical power spectrum is measured by a photodiode (PD), producing a proportional voltage which is averaged for comparison (1) with a desired value (U1). A second comparator (2) incorporates a multiplier (M) supplied with delayed clock pulses for control (T4) of the quiescent current (Iv).
