Visibility of the socket (1) for insertion of the plug (2) is improved in poor light by an illuminated ring (9) of plastics material which constitutes a sleeve for retention of the socket in the dashboard. Light from a lamp in a contact housing (4) fixed to the base of the socket is distributed (10) uniformly around the ring by prisms on the underside of its flange (35). The spiral filament within the plug is retained by a bimetallic spring (15) during warm-up. The lamp socket can be preassembled to the dashboard and secured by automatic handling appts.
