A method is described for the conversion of diesters of general formula (II) by elimination of R6CO2H in the presence of phosphate or zeolite catalysts, into unsatd. monoesters (I), where in each case R1-R5 are H, straight or branched alkyl or alkenyl of C1-10, cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl of C5-8, aryl, alkylaryl or arylalkyl; R6 is H or C1-6 alkyl. The value of n = 1-10. Zeolites may be aluminosilicates or ferrosilicates of the cyclopentasilicate type pref. arranged as a faujasite, i.e. in cuboctahedra, and may be doped with alkali, transistion or rare earth metals.
