Installation of rollers in roller bearing cage - by temporarily holding the rollers in sockets while permanent projections are formed in end recesses by injecting and hardening plastic

A roller bearing assembly is mfd. by inserting the rollers (3) into sockets (2) within a cage (3) and retaining with a holding system while projections (22) are formed at the roller ends. Projections (22) are formed either, (i) in the socket side walls; or (ii) in the end faces (4) of each roller (3). Each projection (22) locates in a concentric recess (23, 24) in either the sidewalls of the sockets or the roller(s) side walls. The holding system is then removed. Projections (22) are formed by (i) injecting a hardenable plastic into one or both ends (4) of each roller (3); (ii) solidifying the plastic to form an anchoring bearing (22) on the walls (16) of each recess; (iii) sepg. each projection (22) from the opposing recess wall (16). USE/ADVANTAGE - The process is used to insert rollers into the sockets of a roller bearing cage. Damage to rollers during installation is reduced. The process is suitable for mass prodn.
