PURPOSE: To provide an apparatus and a method for automatically and accurately sewing a reinforcement to the opening of the sheet of an air bag. CONSTITUTION: This apparatus is provided with a sewing head 10 provided with a clamp mechanism 12 and a supporting table 22 provided with a surface 24. The surface 24 forms a prescribed loading route to a loading station 20 and the transfer station of the clamp mechanism along the surface 24. It is also provided with a positioning device for matching the reinforcing body and the prescribed part of the sheet, a transfer pad having a shape corresponding to the positioning device, a carriage for supporting the transfer pad so as to move along a vertical route passing through the positioning device and along the loading route to the sewing head and a controller for engaging the transfer pad to the sheet and the reinforcing body at the loading station, lifting the surrounding part of the sheet and the reinforcing body to the upper part of the surface 24 and matching the transfer pad to the clamp mechanism 12 further. |
