PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of a reversed main domain and to provide a high-numerical-aperture liq. crystal display. CONSTITUTION:The film at a light shielding layer 22 to be formed on a second substrate 21 in the form of a lattice is thickened, and the distance between signal lines or the scanning line and the second substrate 21 is shortened. A horizontal electric field generated between the scanning line and a picture element electrode 8 is reduced, and the generation of a tilt reversed domain is inhibited in a liq. crystal layer 4 to decrease the width of the light shielding layer 22 and to increase the numerical aperture. As for the interval of the light shielding layer 22, the distance between the electrode 8 and the signal line 5 and scanning line and the thickness of the liq. crystal layer 4 at the region 26 shielded by the light shielding layer 22 formed on the second substrate 21 are controlled to >=1/5 to <=2/3 of the thickness of the liq. crystal layer 4 at the region 25 not shielded by the light shielding layer 22. At >2/3, the light shielding effect is reduced, and the liq. crystal is hardly injected at <1/5. |
