Idling roller (1) with tapered rolling elements (4) comprising inner cylindrical elements (2) and outer cylindrical elements (3), between which is located at least one series of rolling elements (4), in which the outer cylindrical element (3) is very thick and constitutes the rim of the idling roller. The outer cylindrical elements (3) and inner cylindrical elements (2) exhibit paths (5, 5) opposite and facing each other for the rolling elements (4) and are equipped with sealing elements (19) at their ends. The rolling elements (4) are taper rollers and the outer surface of the outer cylindrical element (3) exhibits a peripheral groove (7) with an isosceles trapezium-shaped cross-section perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the idling roller. <IMAGE>
